Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight: Meet Simon Jones, Technical Manager

The next member of the Highstream team we’d like to introduce you to is Simon, our Technical Manager. We’ve had a chat with Simon about life before Highstream and what his role involves.

  1. Tell us about your role at Highstream?

My role as Technical Manager at Highstream is quite varied. I mainly focus on understanding the business processes of our clients in order to identify IT solutions that will make their life easier and their processes more effective.

  1. What projects do you work on?

Anything and everything! The Highstream team have a broad spectrum of knowledge, so we collaborate on most projects together. Most recently, I have been working on projects involving Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Hyper-V and multi-factor authentication.

  1. What did you study at university/college?

I briefly studied for a Business Management degree at university, but quickly realised it wasn’t for me. I spotted an opportunity to do a Modern Apprenticeship in IT with a local electricity company, and I thought that might suit me better. I already had an interest in IT, and the internet was becoming mainstream, so it seemed like a good thing to be involved with.

  1. How did you discover Highstream?

I worked with Paul for nearly ten years in a previous job, so I was aware of Highstream from the start. When the time was right, I joined him, and I haven’t looked back!

  1. Where do you see Highstream being in the next five years?

It’s hard to say, but I hope we can continue to grow year on year. It will take a lot of hard work from everyone, but we aren’t scared of that.

  1. What’s the Highstream team like?

We try and enjoy ourselves. We take our work seriously, but there’s plenty of office humour to make the day more enjoyable. None of us are above a good ribbing from the others, which is good.

  1. Do you have any pets?

There was a spider in the bathroom this morning; does that count…?

  1. What job did you want to do when you were little?

I used to say I wanted to be an ice cream man, but I had little concept of seasonal employment as a toddler. I think I just wanted to drive the van around playing the Greensleeves chimes. And eat all the ice creams, obviously.

  1. What was your first car?

A Skoda Rapid Coupe, in orange, with purple seats.

  1. Where are you most likely to be found outside of work?

On Saturday afternoons, I’m usually at The Racecourse Ground, watching Wrexham AFC. Otherwise, I’ll be at a gig, or out and about with a camera.

  1. How do you take your brew?

Builder’s tea, white-no-sugar. Coffee’s a bit too cosmopolitan for me, being from Wrexham.

  1. What was your first job?

I worked Saturdays at JJB Sports in Wrexham. I’m still a whizz at lacing up a pair of trainers, even now.
