Fast-forward! Top tips to keep your computer running quicker and efficiently

Our busy lives mean we need technology to run smoothly and there is nothing more annoying than a computer system in constant buffering mode or waiting too long for items to load. There could be many reasons as to why your computer is running slow, but here are a few useful tips to try.

Restart your computer

It sounds simple, but sometimes restarting your computer can sort out small and bizarre issues! By going to the Start Menu > Power > and selecting Restart, you can give your computer a chance to catch up with itself. Random Access Memory (RAM) is the short-term memory your computer uses to load Windows and programs. Over time, small errors build up in memory, when given long enough this can cause erratic behavior. Restarting gives the computer a chance to clear these errors out and load back up again all refreshed and renewed.

Clear internet history and disc space

It’s a good idea to keep your computer history clear, restarting your computer will clear current cache. Cache is a small amount of computer memory used to store frequently accessed data. Cache memory is faster than RAM but has a smaller capacity and is more expensive. Often there are cookies connected to the page. These are bits of information that tell the website information about you, such as what you looked at last time you were on that page. You can manually clear the cache and cookies by clearing the internet history.

Clearing disc space can help you by deleting harmful programs that might slow down your system. Deleting apps you don’t use as part of this process may also help.

Keep your software up-to-date

Software for computers is constantly evolving and needs to be kept up-to-date. Programs are constantly being updated to be faster and run more efficiently. The constant updates also reduce vulnerabilities from malware, which can slow down computers. If your computer is requested to automatically update, allow it! When you get messages prompting you to install updates, be sure to install them.
